I just saw this French film, Tomboy, on instant Netflix. I purchased it on amazon about 5 minutes after the credits rolled. This simple and tender movie sticks with you. It treats its young subjects with honesty and sincerity, with a tender understanding that is free of sentimentality and never hits a false note. Sweet and resonant, Tomboy reaches out to you with a complex subject about a child struggling with gender identity and expression, and it makes it seem so simple and uncomplicated. Whether this child goes by the name Laure or Mikael, it does not matter. What matters is the innocence and beauty that resonates throughout every scene, and that beauty ingrained in this film cannot help but permeate our lives as well. A must see.
